Goodbye Goldie and Chickies
Last night we had a raccoon attack our chick-a-loo with our 19 chicks and broody momma hen Goldie. Only three chicks survived. It was a heart breaking scene. Not just because of the death of 16 chicks but because Goldie was one of our original three bantam hens and probably one of the coolest, best momma chickens ever. Alot of evidence was left behind from the attack but we were not able to find...

Being a Role Model for Good Health from The... →
Here are tips for helping yourself and your child to good health: Eat the healthy foods and drink the beverages (water, low-fat milk, and 100% juices) that you want your children to consume. For example, research shows a mom’s own milk drinking habit is linked to more milk and fewer sugary drinks in her child’s diet. Make every effort to have family meals at home and serve as a healthy role...

Weekend Project- Mother's Day Weekend
Ok, so lets assume you care what I’m doing this weekend… especially when I entice you by stating I have a particular weekend project. This weekend I hope to make strawberry freezer jam. Have you made freezer jam? Have any tips?

Buh-bye roosters!
Our flock of hens have been terrorized for the past few months by 3 roosters. It started out as two and then one of the chicks our bantam brahma hatched turned out to be another roo. All day long the three boys would run about, crowing, chasing the hens, causing all kinds of mischief. Rarely did they serve as protectors or food finders and over time the hens have started to look worse for wear....

How to grill a whole fish?
We’ve grilled whole fish twice now, and while I can’t claim to be an expert, I think we have a pretty good system going. We were initially inspired to try cooking a whole fish by a recent episode of The Splendid Table. Lynne had on guest Melissa Clark (who writes for The New York Times) to discuss why it is so AWESOME to cook fish whole, and how it can be done easily. Melissa provided...

Crazy Delicious- Mustard Vinaigrette
This recipe for mustard vinaigrette is based loosely off of a recipe I recently heard on NPR. I really enjoy whole grain mustard and a little white wine for consistency so I added those two and came up with my own combination. Here’s how it goes: Ingredients: 1 Tbs whole grain mustard 2 Tbs Dijon mustard 2 medium size cloves of garlic (or one LARGE) 2-3 tsp white wine (just make sure the...
